The tragic story of Devdas has been immortalized on screen but nothing comes close to this epic by Anurag Kashyap. A modern take on an old classic, it features a very smart and polite Dev, who rejects Paro’s initial advances as she seems a bit too rustic for his liking. However, he later begins to fall in love with her – a little too late, as her marriage has been fixed with someone else. Enter Chandramukhi, a courtesan whom Dev frequents, who becomes a major part of his life. Chandramukhi helps her through her trauma. The film is a cocktail of drugs, emotions and drama and Abhay Deol’s performance makes it a must watch.

In this film, we see another alternative to these two methods – cold blooded revenge. The story is about a couple who have had a good marriage except for the domestic abuse that the husband is subjected to after getting drunk. He flies into a rage and beats his wife, and this becomes a regular occurrence until his wife decides she’s had enough. Together with her mother, she plots against her husband, and manages to exact revenge, albeit in a disjointed and unorthodox fashion—and get away with it.
